Carnaval dos Animais

During 2010 we taught scenography in the Music School Nossa Senhora do Cabo, Lisbon, Portugal. The project consisted in getting three different artistic practices together: music, dance and stage design having the Camille Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals music play as the basis.
During one year the stage design students went to the orchestra and dance reharsals, and vice versa: this experience allowed the students to conceive and explore new ideas that sprung from the mixture between diverse art languages. The final concept was based on the idea of the 13 animals as neighbours: each animal living besides one another, just like the Camille Saint Sans movements.

Besides the work with the doors (found and collected in the Lisbon streets) the scenario students made a performative appearance as a moving dynamic scenario piece. In the end, the stage design lessons became the support for the performance and visual arts.

Here are some photographs of the presentation with 130 children on stage in Theatre Camões in Lisbon Centre.
